Why longaan?
Longaan are fruits native to southern China though nowadays also cultivated here in the states, just like me ❤️
Longaan are harvested carefully in bunches, as to not detach the fruit from the branch, because they stay fresher that way. The metaphors write themselves.
The name 龍眼 translates to "dragon's eye" because of its white, translucent flesh and black pit. My brother has the same character in his name (鴻龍)
Longaan have a papery skin that can be peeled or squeezed away when ripe—allowing for the ultimate display of immigrant generational love—presenting a plate of peeled fruit.
They're like lychees in that way, succulent and juicy too, though their taste is more straightforward and sweet.
